- Tests have shown that a dog cannot see its owner when the owner stands a mere 300 yards away, but is not moving. However, a
dog can easily detect someone a mile away waving his arms!
- Dogs and bitches do not get fat simply as a result of sterilization surgery. Like other mammals, they gain weight if they eat
too much and exercise too little or are genetically programmed to be hefty.
- There are many myths about canine reproductive needs. Chiefly among these are the suspicion that neutering turns a male into
a sissy and spaying causes a female to get fat and to lament her lost capacity.
- Heat cycles in fertile bitches bring hormonal changes that can lead to personality changes. Repeated heat cycles subject the
reproductive system to uterine and mammary cancers and uterine infections.
- The average life span for dogs has increased from 7 years in the 1930's to more than 12 years today. With the right care,
it's not uncommon for dogs to live to 14 or more these days.
- Veterinarians generally consider small dogs to be senior citizens at about 12 years of age, while large dogs reach the senior
stage at 6 to 8 years of age. This roughly corresponds to the 55-plus category in people.
- Problems with vision and hearing are natural as a dog ages. Accommodate these changes as best you can -- by not changing the
location of furniture, for example, or clapping instead of calling your dog's name when he no longer seems able to hear you.
- Feeding your dog table scraps from rich, fatty meals can give your dog gastroenteritis or pancreatitis.
- Laika was he first dog in space. Laika was aboard the Soviet satellite Sputnik 2 in 1957.
- Some historians report that a dog named Saur, or Suening was "king" of Norway for three years during the 11th century AD. The
Norwegian king, angry that his subjects once deposed him, put Saur on the throne and demanded that it be treated regally.
- The Basenji is the only domestic dog that only breeds once a year. It is also the only domestic dog breed that does not
bark. Basenji dogs and Australian dingoes are virtually identical.
- In the United States and France, almost one in three families own a dog. Germany and Switzerland only have one dog for every
ten families. They need more dogs!
- The common belief that dogs are colorblind is false. Dogs can see color but it is not as vivid a color scheme as we see. It
is much like our vision at twilight.
- Dogs do not chew up our things to "get back" at us. Dogs are attracted to our remotes and other prized belongings because our
scent is so strong and chewing releases agents which help to calm our dogs.
- Having a pet is good for the heart: dog owners who suffer heart attacks or irregular heartbeats are 8.5 times more likely to
be alive 1 year after the diagnosis than non-dog owners.
- Some noted scientists point out that domestication of dogs by capturing, taming, and breeding wolves is unrealistic because
the resources of early man and long term planning required to control the yearly mating for the many years necessary to implement
a genetic change would have been overwhelming.
- Many allergies are associated with the dander (dry skin that flakes off and floats through the air) produced by the dog and
not the dog himself. The poodle, maltese, portuguese water dog, bedlington terrier, and dachshund, are a few breeds noted for
producing less dander.
- A Mexican hairless would not do well in the cold climate of the Rocky Mountains, but an Alaskan malamute would be perfectly
comfortable.
- The expense of keeping a dog is proportional to his size. A very big dog may be just what you think you need but remember, he
will eat like a big dog and veterinary bills (for antibiotics, heartworm preventative treatment, etc.) will be higher.
- Most novice owners would be well advised to avoid breeds genetically selected for enhanced aggression, such as pit bulls,
rottweilers, chow -chows, and akitas.
- If the only problem for a family member is that his/her dog jumps up on the bed during the daytime, keeping the bedroom door
shut is an obvious and easy solution.
- A fearless dog that is intent on attacking is silent. It doesn't waste time barking, that is, sounding the alarm. It just
rushes over and bites. On the other hand, a dog that wants to flee instead will also be silent as it runs away.
- A dog that is growling or snarling (or possibly silent), is standing rigidly, and is giving you a fixed stare, is a dog that
you should NOT touch. The best approach is to stand still, avert your eyes and do nothing.
- Male dogs have less desire to roam, to mark territory (including furniture), and are not as quick to react to stimuli after
they are neutered. They are also healthier pets: no testicles means no testicular cancer, which is not uncommon among aging
intact male dogs.
- All dogs are probably descended from an animal called Tomarctus. This animal lived approximately 15 million years ago.
